The R71 route through Magoebaskloof, Limpopo, has been shut down following a gas truck explosion that sparked a wildfire early Tuesday morning. The incident occurred just outside Tzaneen and has since drawn urgent response from emergency teams battling to control the blaze.
Authorities have confirmed that the explosion triggered fires across the nearby veld and forestry, with the flames spreading quickly due to dry conditions. The truck, en route from Polokwane to Tzaneen, burst into flames after the gas cylinder it was carrying detonated.
The driver, who sustained only minor injuries, has been taken to hospital for medical attention. Fortunately, no other injuries have been reported at this stage.
Emergency Teams Battle Magoebaskloof Fires
According to Matome Moremi Taueatsoala, spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the explosion caused multiple secondary blasts in the surrounding area. These ignited a fire in a nearby plantation, prompting the immediate closure of the R71.
“The R71 is currently closed to all traffic until further notice. Emergency services are on the scene, working to contain the situation,” said Taueatsoala. He urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes such as Georges Valley Road.
Traffic authorities are also redirecting vehicles away from the danger zone to ensure the safety of commuters and clean-up teams.
Residents Raise Longstanding Route Concerns
Local residents and volunteers assisting with clean-up efforts have voiced concerns over the frequent use of the R71 by heavy-duty vehicles. Francois Liebenberg, a community volunteer, noted that the disaster could have been avoided if trucks adhered to prescribed routes.
“Trucks are supposed to use the Georges Valley turn-off, but many opt for the shorter Magoebaskloof route. This poses serious risks to the community and environment,” said Liebenberg. He added that the fire threatened not just the road infrastructure but also critical forestry areas and local plantations.
The Limpopo Transport Department has promised to investigate the cause of the explosion more thoroughly and examine stricter enforcement of truck routing regulations through the area.
Ongoing Mop-Up and Safety Warnings
Clean-up and mop-up operations are now underway, with fire crews working around the clock to prevent flare-ups. The affected stretch of the R71 remains closed, with no timeline yet given for its reopening.
Authorities have emphasized that the public should stay away from the scene and comply with route diversions. Local safety teams are patrolling surrounding areas to prevent the fire from reaching residential zones.
The event has highlighted ongoing transport safety issues in the region, and further updates from the Department of Transport are expected in the coming days.
