Cassper Nyovest says AKA’s “Sim Dope” ripped off his 2017 hit “Tito Mboweni”
In a recent chat on L‑Tido’s Podcast, South Africa’s own “Mufasa”‑Cassper Nyovest dropped a surprise claim that the late rapper AKA’s classic track Sim Dope was inspired by his own 2017 smash, Tito Mboweni.
The claim came in a somewhat casual tone, but Nyovest admitted he’d preferred AKA (real name Kiernan Forbes) to respond if he were still alive. “The beat and concept of the song were quite similar,” he told the host.
Nyovest also revealed that he almost signed with CEO Raphael Benza’s Benza label before he chose a different path.
The interview snippet quickly went viral. In response, Raphaël Benza – CEO of Vth Season and former manager of AKA – stepped onto the scene to set the record straight. He posted a short video clip in which he respectfully dismissed Nyovest’s claim and praised the contributions of both artists to South African hip‑hop.
“Okay, I will correct you. You are wrong. The only thing I can confirm is that you were almost signed by Benza. You guys are two different types of artists. South Africa did best by having you two around at the same damn time. We all benefited. I don’t think that era will ever happen again in the South African music industry, but God knows we need it again. #RIPAKA. Keep your movement moving.”
