BYD gears up for a “major” push into South Africa’s electric‑vehicle market

In a bold move to fast‑track electric‑vehicle (EV) adoption, Chinese automaker BYD (Build Your Dreams) announced a sizable investment in South Africa’s charging infrastructure. The company said it wants to “rapidly” expand its footprint in the country and get a foothold that could serve as a launchpad for growth across the region.

Stella Li, BYD’s Executive Vice‑President, stressed that South Africa is a pivotal market for the Shenzhen‑based brand. “South Africa is not just an important customer for us; it’s a future springboard for our regional expansion,” she said.
Li added that the company’s planned infrastructure upgrades—and potential new vehicle models tailored to local conditions—will accelerate the country’s transition to electric mobility.
