Telegram for Android gets a slick new “Liquid Glass” look
Telegram’s latest beta build (v12.2.0 β) brings a fresh “Liquid Glass” effect to the app on Android. The new design gently blurs the message‑input bar, emoji picker, GIF selector and sticker panels, giving the interface a frosted‑glass, almost translucent feel. The look was first teased on iOS, and the Android update marks a gradual shift toward a more unified, glass‑styled UI across the platform.
Because the effect uses the same transparency and layering tricks that eye‑catch Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3, the update looks even more coherent on Xiaomi phones – a point we’ll get into later.
What Is Liquid Glass?
Liquid Glass is all about a semi‑transparent, glossy appearance that lets you peek through the foreground to the background. Think of a sheet of frosted glass: the colors beneath and the actions you can take through the UI pop out, making the interface feel lighter and more vibrant. It also boosts readability, as the contrast between text and the translucent background is sharper.
Community and Developer Buzz
The new look has excited many beta testers, but a few users are concerned that the extra blur will slow things down. To address this, Telegram has added a “Liquid Glass” toggle in the Power‑Saver settings. Think of it as a quick gesture that lets you switch the effect on or off.
The toggle is still only in the beta build – Telegram hasn’t confirmed whether it will ship with the next official release.
Developers are eyeing the feature too. By extending Material You or creating custom UI frameworks, they hope to bring Liquid Glass to more Android apps, turning the design into a mainstream trend (not unlike how iOS’s blur became a staple).
Why Xiaomi Users Will Notice
Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 already leans heavily on iOS‑style translucency. Its control‑center, volume panels and other system menus use the same glass‑morphing elements, so the Telegram update feels like a natural extension of the system look. If you’re a Xiaomi owner, you’ll quickly spot how the chat app blends with the overall device aesthetics.
As Android developers experiment with Liquid Glass, the boundaries between system UI and individual apps will keep blurring—quite literally.
