Xiaomi 17 Ultra: South Africa’s next‑gen camera phone is set to blow our minds

A fresh leak from the well‑known tech blogger @DigitalChatStation has just confirmed that Xiaomi’s new flagship – the Xiaomi 17 Ultra – will bundle some truly revolutionary photography tech. Here’s everything we know so far.

Revolutionary Camera Design and Build

Early engineering shots show the 17 Ultra will feature a huge, round central camera module that houses a massive periscope lens in the upper part of the phone. The back panel is to be made from fiberglass, giving it a sleek texture while keeping it lightweight.

The display will retain the flat, four‑sided layout Xiaomi used on its previous “large” models in the 17 series. Colour options include classic black, a stylish white and a bold purple finish that looks more like a professional camera than a phone. One prototype even looks very camera‑like, signalling Xiaomi’s ambition to blend phone design with pro‑level imaging.

Advanced Imaging Capabilities

The 17 Ultra will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and will sport a 50‑MP ultra‑large primary sensor. This sensor supports In‑Sensor Zoom (ISZ), which lets you switch from the main macro sensor to the periscope lens without any loss of quality.

The periscope unit will feature a 200‑MP sensor and 4×4 RMSC technology, allowing multi‑focal‑length zoom and a telephoto macro mode. Both lenses promise higher dynamic range, better optical depth, and precise focusing – all of which Xiaomi calls “revolutionary and camera‑level”.

Xiaomi’s Commitment to Imaging Excellence

Xiaomi is clearly determined to stay the leader in mobile photography. The 17 Ultra follows the legacy of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept, which introduced the world’s first Leica camera lens on a smartphone. The new device is said to build on that vision, combining optical precision, AI software and innovative materials for professional‑grade imaging.
