Toyota GR GT officially revealed – a V8‑hybrid beast on the road

By Marius Boonzaier – 5 Dec 2025

Toyota has taken a page out of the books of the legendary 2000 GT and the sleek Lexus LFA, and shown the world its newest sports coupe – the GR GT. The two‑seater is a full‑throttle hybrid that turns a big‑cylinder V8 into a track‑ready powerhouse.

Powertrain that packs a punch

Front‑mounted, the GR GT uses a 4.0‑litre twin‑turbo V8 coupled with a single electric motor. An 8‑speed automatic, fitted with a wet‑start clutch, sends all that energy straight to the rear wheels. Toyota says the hybrid can hit 478 kW (about 641 hp) and 850 Nm of torque – and the car can top out at 320 km/h (200 mph) or more when the conditions are right.

Aerodynamics first

To keep two‑seat fury from blowing off the rear end at those speeds, Toyota has made aerodynamics the priority. The GR GT’s “aerodynamics first” design sees the entire body frame built from aluminium, with panels made from the same material plus carbon‑fibre‑reinforced plastic (CFRP).

The prototype measures 1,195 mm high, 2,000 mm wide, 4,820 mm long, and has a 2,725‑mm wheelbase. For comparison, it sits 163 mm lower, 16 mm wider, and 92 mm longer than the Mercedes‑AMG GT.

Lightweight, well‑balanced

The goal is to keep curb weight below 1,750 kg with a 45:55 front‑to‑rear weight distribution. The lightweight construction, combined with a stiff chassis, gives it the balance needed for the track.

Suspension and brakes that stay glued

The GR GT uses fresh double‑wishbone geometry on both ends, with forged aluminium arms. 20‑inch alloy wheels mount Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres – 265/35 ZR20 on the front and 325/30 ZR20 on the rear – specially tuned for the car. It also gets a carbon‑ceramic braking system, giving both performance and light‑weight stopping power.

Cup‑level interior in a road‑ready shell

Inside, everything revolves around the driver. The cabin hosts digital gauges, steering‑wheel paddle shifters, a touchscreen infotainment system, dual‑zone climate control, heated seats and steering wheel, plus a nose‑lift feature to keep the car stable at high speed. The design stays focused on driving visibility and placement, keeping the cockpit uncluttered.

From testing to production

Toyota says the GR GT has been repeatedly pushed to its limits, driven to failure, and then rebuilt to prove it can live up to racing expectations. Development will continue, with the team targeting the most powerful GR model for a 2027 launch.

With its V8‑hybrid heart, advanced aerodynamics, and track‑ready setup, the GR GT looks set to become Toyota’s flagship for the next chapter in high‑performance cars.
