In March 2026, a total of 58 060 new vehicles were sold in South Africa, according to naamsa, the Automotive Business Council of SA. Notably, this figure signified not only an increase of 8 560 units compared to the same month in 2025, but also an uplift of 4 605 units versus February 2026.
Of the total new-vehicle sales, an estimated 88.7% were dealer sales. The car rental industry accounted for 5.5% of overall sales, while government sales and industry corporate fleets accounted for 3.2% and 2.6%, respectively.
Looking closer at new passenger-car sales in March 2026, passenger cars made up 67.8% of total new-vehicle sales, or 39 370 units — up 6 054 units (18.2%) from March 2025.
Taking the top spot among the new passenger cars sold in SA, the VW Polo Vivo registered 2 229 units sold. The Chery Tiggo 4 claimed second with 1 888 units sold in March 2026, while the Toyota Corolla Cross took third with 1 536 units sold. Rounding out the top five were 1 400 new Suzuki Swift units and 1 361 Hyundai Grand i10 units.
