Foton has set a new sales milestone in South Africa, announcing it has sold over 5,000 vehicles since it re-entered the SA market in 2024.

Naamsa figures show Foton SA recorded 604 new-vehicle sales in March 2026, pushing the total past 5,000 units in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) and Medium Commercial Vehicle (MCV) segments since the Chinese firm, in partnership with Combined Motor Holdings (CMH) Group, re-entered the South African market in June 2024.

“This milestone reflects the pace at which Foton is establishing itself in South Africa,” said Marius Smal, CEO of Foton South Africa. “Reaching over 5,000 vehicles on the road in a relatively short period (only 18 months) is a strong indicator of how our product offering is landing with customers, as well as the strength of our dealer network and support structures.”

Foton’s local bakkie lineup includes the Tunland G7 single- and double-cab bakkies, plus the Tunland V7 and Tunland V9 double-cab bakkies. The V9, the flagship model, was launched in November 2025. The local range also features the Truckmate single-cab and View panel van, both available with internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric powertrains. The Asambe minibus and View Royal Saloon seat 16 and 15 passengers, respectively, and are offered with a choice of petrol or diesel engines. In the MCV segment, Foton sells the Miler and eAumark trucks.

“Our approach has been clear: to offer vehicles that deliver on durability, value and real-world usability,” Smal added. “This milestone isn’t just about growing the numbers; it’s about building long-term trust with South African customers.”

The local arm is also moving into manufacturing, establishing a local plant in Gqeberha, the brand’s first overseas manufacturing facility. “The start of local assembly marks a major step forward for the brand,” Smal said. “It lets us respond more effectively to local market demand, while contributing to South Africa’s broader automotive manufacturing ecosystem.”
