Mercedes-Benz has revealed the updated GLS, giving its flagship SUV a refreshed look outside and inside. On the outside, it gets a larger front grille with contour lighting, and, like the refreshed S-Class, it features star-shaped daytime-running lights. The taillamps also incorporate these lights.

Inside, the cabin is all about the MBUX Superscreen as standard. The setup includes three 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster, the touchscreen infotainment system and the front passenger, all under a single glass panel across the dashboard. Behind the front seats, there are two 11.6-inch displays for rear-seat entertainment. All three rows get electrically adjustable seats, and Mercedes-Benz says there’s enough space in the third row for passengers up to 1.94 metres tall.

Across four trim levels, there are three powertrain options. The GLS 350d 4Matic and 450d 4Matic run on a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbodiesel, producing 230 kW/650 Nm in the 350d and 270 kW/750 Nm in the 450d. The 450 4Matic uses a 3.0-litre inline-six turbopetrol, delivering 280 kW and 560 Nm of torque. Beneath the bonnet of the GLS 580 4Matic sits a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, generating 395 kW and 750 Nm, enabling a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds.

All engines get a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, adding a boost of 17 kW/205 Nm for short periods. The GLS also comes with E-Active Body Control and air suspension.
