In August 2025, VW South Africa told CAR Magazine that the Mk8.5 Golf GTI, which we sampled for an exclusive first local drive, has finally been confirmed for our market after issues with SA’s fuel quality originally kept the updated eighth generation from arriving. Now the Mk8.5 Golf GTI is officially available in SA, and its Clubsport sibling is “under consideration” for our market, according to VW’s local arm.
Unveiled in 2024, the Mk8.5 Golf GTI Clubsport uses an uprated version of the standard Golf GTI’s EA888 LK3 evo4 powertrain. In the standard car, the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine makes 195 kW and 370 Nm of torque, enough for a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds. The Clubsport pushes this further, delivering 221 kW and 400 Nm, with the latter available across a wide 1 800-5 200 r/min range (the standard car’s peak torque comes on from 1 600-4 500 r/min). Power goes to the front wheels exclusively through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
According to VW, the GTI Clubsport can run from 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, making it 0.3 seconds quicker to three figures than the standard GTI. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but selecting the Race package lifts that limit to 267 km/h.
The Clubsport features an electronically controlled front differential lock. To further sharpen handling, DCC adaptive chassis control is available as an optional extra. It rides on 19-inch ‘Queenstown’ alloy wheels, with 8 kg ‘Warmenau’ forged wheels of a similar size also offered.
As a quick reminder from February 2026, while the GTI Clubsport is under consideration for SA, VW South Africa is confident the Mk8.5 Golf R will also make its way to the local market.
