The first of its kind: VW has officially unveiled the ID. Polo GTI, the all-electric, performance-focused version of the popular compact hatch. VW first revealed the electric Polo in April 2026, and a GTI variant was promised for this year. Now the ID. Polo GTI is here.
The ID. Polo GTI packs a single electric motor producing 166 kW and 290 N.m of torque, sent to the front wheels. Compared with the petrol Polo GTI, which is built at VW’s Plant Kariega in South Africa, the electric version is about 19 kW more powerful. The ICE Polo GTI, however, is torque-rich with 320 N.m. In the numbers game, the ID. Polo GTI weighs in at about 1,540 kg (claimed), and hits 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, just a touch slower than the ICE model’s 6.7-second sprint. Top speed is 175 km/h for the electric version, versus 238 km/h for the petrol variant.
The ID. Polo GTI runs on a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery. VW’s claim puts the range at up to 424 km (WLTP) on a full charge. The battery supports up to 105 kW DC fast charging, and VW says a 10-80% charge takes about 24 minutes.
Inside, the ID. Polo features a 10.25-inch configurable digital driver’s display with Mk1 Golf-inspired graphics for a classic feel, plus a 12.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen. There are several GTI-specific touches to differentiate it from the standard ID. Polo.
Pricing and market timing: VW says the ID. Polo GTI has not yet been confirmed for the South African market. It’s priced from just under €39,000, which works out to about R756,313.35 at the current Rand-Euro rate. By comparison, the ICE Polo GTI is priced from around R585,800.
