Changan, distributed in South Africa by Jameel Motors, entered the SA market towards the end of 2025. Its initial lineup included the budget-friendly Alsvin sedan, the CS75 Pro midsize SUV, and a pair of double-cab pickups—the turbodiesel Hunter and the Hunter REEV (range-extended electric vehicle), which is one of the most powerful bakkies in SA. The Chongqing-based brand also introduced the Deepal S07 all-electric crossover/SUV to local shores. Now, the company has expanded its lineup with the Uni-S.

The Uni-S range comprises three derivatives. The entry-level CS variant is priced from under R400 000 (full pricing below). The other two models are the CL (mid-range) and CE (flagship).

Power comes from a single engine across the range: a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol delivering 138 kW and 300 Nm. Front-wheel drive routes power to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Uni-S, which we’ve already had an exclusive first look at before its local introduction, is priced from R389,900 for the CS up to R469,900 for the CE. The mid-range CL starts at R429,900. All models come with a five-year/150 000 km warranty and a five-year/90 000 km service plan.

So, what does each trim include? All models come with LED headlamps, a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring, and a 540-degree camera setup. The CS grade adds a four-speaker audio system, ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, and four airbags.

The CL gains a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, leather upholstery for the seats and steering wheel, six-way electric adjustment for the driver’s seat, and six airbags. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and lane departure warning, front collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.

The CE trim upgrades to an eight-speaker sound system and adds memory function for the driver’s seat, four-way electric adjustment for the front passenger seat, a panoramic sunroof, and an electrically operated tailgate. CE also gets extra ADAS, such as blind-spot monitoring and front-collision warning.

The Uni-S measures 4 539 mm in length, 1 865 mm in width and 1 680 mm in height – dimensions similar to the Jaecoo J7, which we evaluated in plug-in hybrid guise for a test in 2025. The Uni-S has a wheelbase of 2 656 mm.
