GWM has released images of its new Haval flagship SUV, codenamed ‘HX’. Set to debut on 10 April 2026, the big Haval could go up against the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 and the SA-bound Denza B8, which is among the Chinese models confirmed for South Africa in 2026.
Although Haval hasn’t released full specs yet, Chinese reports say the HX will ride on GWM’s One modular architecture and will offer several powertrain options — including internal combustion (ICE), traditional hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), battery-electric (BEV) and fuel-cell electric (FCEV). Based on the Wey V9X, which uses the GWM One platform, the PHEV variant could feature a 175 kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine paired with two electric motors — one on the front axle and one on the rear — boosting peak power significantly.
The HX adopts a squared-off exterior design. The front fascia shows a rectangular grille, flanked by square LED headlights. At the back, there are vertical LED taillamps and a full-size spare wheel mounted on the tailgate.
Haval hasn’t revealed the interior yet. But as is common with many Chinese models, expect plenty of tech as standard. The production HX is also said to feature GWM’s latest driver-assistance system, based on the Vision Language, Action (VLA) model.
There’s no official word yet on whether the new Haval will come to South Africa. However, CarNewsChina says there’s a “high chance” this model will become the new flagship Haval SUV in overseas markets, including SA.
