The family of slain musician DJ Sumbody has expressed deep appreciation for the police force’s unwavering commitment in seeking justice, following arrests in connection with his tragic 2022 murder.

Speaking outside the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, family spokesperson Chad Thomas described the arrests as a long-awaited relief. He noted the family’s gratitude for the relentless efforts of law enforcement officers, especially in such a high-profile and dangerous case.

The court appearance on Tuesday marked a significant moment in the investigation. Four men — Micheal Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Musa Kekana, and businessman Katiso Molefe — stand accused of the murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The charges relate to the deaths of DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa Sefoka, and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza.

Long-Awaited Progress After a Violent Ambush

In November 2022, DJ Sumbody and his security team were ambushed in a brutal hail of bullets in Woodmead, Johannesburg. Authorities suspect it was a calculated execution. The incident shocked the nation, raising serious concerns about safety and organized criminal activity in the entertainment industry.

“It’s been a long and painful journey for the family,” Thomas said. “We are truly thankful that there are police members who remain committed and focused, despite the dangers they face.”

While the recent court developments offer hope, the family remains cautious. The traumatic nature of the case and the risks posed to investigators have only heightened their concerns.

Dedicated Officers Praised Amid Ongoing Threats

Thomas highlighted the intense pressure faced by the police, revealing that members involved in the investigation now require heightened security. Their involvement in this sensitive, high-stakes case has reportedly placed their lives at risk.

“This is a serious concern for us,” said Thomas. “We should not have to worry about the safety of our police because they’re doing their jobs. But it speaks volumes about the danger and importance of this case.”

He emphasized that while high-profile cases draw attention, justice must be pursued for all victims, regardless of their fame. The family hopes the arrests mark a turning point not only for them but for the broader justice system in South Africa.

Hope for Closure, Call for Broader Justice

As the court process continues, the Sefoka family is hopeful that true justice will be served. Thomas said the family seeks closure and accountability, especially after enduring such a drawn-out investigation.

“Our ultimate hope is that this encourages continued action in similar cases,” Thomas concluded. “Let this not end here. Let justice be a right, not a privilege for the well-known.”
