Confirmed for South Africa, Chery has revealed the interior of its SA-bound new double-cab bakkie, internally known as ‘KP31’.

In February 2026, Chery showed a prototype of its upcoming bakkie, code-named KP31. Now the Chinese brand has unveiled the interior of the SA-bound double-cab. Let’s take a look inside…
On the dashboard sits a large horizontal touchscreen infotainment system, with a digital driver’s display in front of a leather-wrapped, two-spoke multifunction steering wheel. A wireless smartphone charging tray sits below the central air vents, and above those vents are physical switches for operating the climate control system.
There are also a range of physical buttons on the centre console for Auto and EV/HEV driving modes, the 360-degree surround-view camera system, and front seat heating/ventilation. The front/rear/center diff-locks are engaged via a toggle on the left-hand side of the leather-trimmed gear selector.

Confirmed to arrive in SA in the fourth quarter of 2026, or the first quarter of 2027, the KP31 will use a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain consisting of a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine and an electric motor. Peak power and torque haven’t been announced yet, but reports suggest this diesel-electric setup could produce around 260 kW and 680 Nm. Chery also claims an electric-only operating range of up to 170 km.
Under the skin, the model sits on Chery’s Kaitan ladder-frame platform. The production bakkie is expected to measure 5,450 mm in length and 1,920 mm in width. Targeted payload is 1,000 kg, with a braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg.
As a reminder, the KP31 isn’t the only Chery bakkie heading to SA. As noted in “Every bakkie confirmed for SA in 2026,” the Himla, which we sampled for a first drive in China, will also reach our market this year.
