After months of speculation, Samsung finally gave South African tech fans a sneak peek of its first-ever tri‑fold smartphone – a prototype that will go head‑to‑head with Huawei’s Mate XTs.

The 10‑inch foldable, dubbed the Galaxy Z tri‑fold, was unveiled at a side‑event of the APEC Summit called the K‑Tech Showcase. Samsung didn’t hand over a finished handset – just a mock‑up – but the prototype already looked like a clear rival to the Chinese maker’s flagship.

Huawei has long led the foldable wars, owning two double‑fold fellas – the Mate XTs and its previously‑released pre‑decessor. With no other player in the tri‑fold market, Samsung’s move signals it’s ready to challenge Huawei’s dominance.

What the prototype looks like

Like the Mate XTs, the Galaxy Z tri‑fold prototype uses a dual‑hinge design that folds in three directions. The internal screen measures a generous 10 inches, while a smaller 6.5‑inch cover panel sits on the front – essentially a pocket‑size tablet. Technically, it feels like a handheld PC ready for the on‑the‑go user.

The demo unit is still behind a glass case at the K‑Tech event. Attendees can see it, but none can touch or test it. Samsung might release a slimmer, more refined version once the design is finalized.

When to expect it

Samsung appears to be taking its time polishing the new tri‑fold, improving cameras, durability and software. The company hints that mass production could start by the end of the year. If those rumours are correct, users in South Africa and elsewhere may see a updated spec sheet and extra software perks by then.

The prototype was showcased on October 28 at the K‑Tech Showcase, a side event of the APEC CEO Summit. Samsung may give the full revelation at the main APEC Summit from October 31 to November 1.
