The updated Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 SUV and Coupé come with two powertrains, including a plug‑in hybrid.
Fresh off the reveal of the updated Mercedes-Benz GLE, AMG has pulled the wraps off the revised GLE 53 SUV and Coupé models.
Both models use an updated version of the Affalterbach brand’s M256 EVO internal combustion engine (ICE). In standard form, the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six pumps out 330 kW and 600 N.m, and is paired with 48 V mild-hybrid tech. The mild-hybrid system provides a 17 kW/40 N.m boost for short bursts, with an additional 205 N.m available from the integrated starter generator (ISG). AMG says this version hits 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain is also on offer with the GLE 53 Hybrid. In this setup, the M256 EVO ICE is tuned to 330 kW and 560 N.m, combined with a 135 kW/480 N.m electric motor. The PHEV delivers a total of 430 kW and 750 N.m, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds. The top speed remains 250 km/h (electronically governed). The GLE 53 Hybrid SUV and Coupé offer electric-only ranges of up to 91 km and 93 km, respectively.
Power from both variants goes to the road via Mercedes-AMG’s 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. There’s also AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with adaptive dampers.
