Aiming for a simpler, more intuitive user experience, Volvo Cars has announced it has released its largest over-the-air software update to date.
Volvo Cars has rolled out its most comprehensive over-the-air update yet, targeting around 2.5 million vehicles in 85 countries. The update, named Volvo Car UX, brings a redesigned central display that’s easier to use and requires fewer taps to reach key functions. It also runs faster than before.
The update is built on Android Automotive OS and includes integrated Google services, with an interface that prioritises simplicity. A new home screen positions commonly used features like maps, media, and phone front-and-centre, reducing the need to dive into menus.
A contextual bar further boosts usability by adapting to driving conditions and showing recently used apps. For example, exterior camera controls appear at low speeds to help with manoeuvres in tight spaces. In plug-in hybrid models, drivers can access and switch between drive modes directly from the home screen, making it easier to move between hybrid and fully electric driving.
“This update is one of the largest over-the-air updates in automotive history, leveraging years of investment in Volvo Cars’ tech stack to improve life with their cars for millions of people,” said Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Volvo Cars. “Our new user experience delivers significant updates and improvements in areas most used by drivers, and directly addresses the needs and desires of our customers.”
The update also prepares compatible vehicles for an upcoming conversational AI experience powered by Google Gemini, which will be introduced at a later stage.
The Volvo Car UX update will be available at no cost to owners of 2020 model year or newer vehicles equipped with Google built-in. Additionally, customers whose vehicles aren’t currently equipped with Pilot Assist will have the option to buy and download this driver-assistance feature.
