Xiaomi 17 Ultra: New camera upgrades but no ‘Back Screen’—leak reveals key details

A fresh leak from DigitalChatStation is giving us a clear picture of what Xiaomi’s next flagship might look like – both a big camera upgrade and a surprising omission of the much‑talked‑about Back Screen.

The camera story

According to the leak, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will sport a brand‑new 50‑megapixel primary sensor, noticeably larger than the sensors seen on earlier 17 models. It will use In‑Sensor Zoom (ISZ) technology, which lets the phone zoom using the high‑resolution sensor itself, producing a sharper, cleaner image than standard digital zoom.

On top of that, the device may also feature a whopping 200‑megapixel periscope camera. It will support multiple focal lengths and offer strong macro photography, although some reviewers note the focus performance may not be perfect.

What about the display?

One of the buzzwords that has trended around Xiaomi phones is the “Magic Back Screen”, a flexible display that stretches under the camera. A curious netizen asked if the new model would ditch this feature or introduce a new design. The tipster replied that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will instead keep the traditional circular camera bump on the back – meaning no Magic Back Screen in this release.

So, while camera enthusiasts will be pleased, fans hoping for a flexible display might be disappointed.

Release timeline

Sources say the Xiaomi 17 Ultra should arrive in South Africa sometime between January and February 2025. In the meantime, more details are expected to emerge, so keep an eye out.
