Xiaomi’s Mobile Software Director says the new stacked‑background feature will start internal testing in December
Xiaomi’s Mobile Software Director, Zhang Guoquan, has revealed that the company will begin testing a new stacked background interface inside HyperOS this December. The upgrade aims to make multitasking smoother on Xiaomi phones, giving users a more fluid, visually‑appealing way to switch between apps. The news surfaced after Zhang responded to a user’s suggestion on Weibo, underlining Xiaomi’s focus on real‑world user experience with its new operating system, HyperOS.

Xiaomi’s Zhang Guoquan confirms development progress

During a Weibo Q&A, a Xiaomi fan asked for a stacked background interface to better use large screens on current phones. Zhang answered, “Received, working on it.” He added that the feature had already reached the demo stage but was still being fine‑tuned. Developers are wrapping up the code, and internal testing is slated to start in December.

What is the stacked background interface?

The stacked background interface lets users see running apps as a stack of cards—largest on the bottom, smallest on top—based on the order they were opened.

  • Swipe left or right to jump between apps.
  • Swipe up to close the top app.

It’s a throw‑back to earlier multitasking styles seen in 2009’s webOS and later Apple’s iOS 9, but now refreshed for modern screens.

Historical inspiration and design evolution

Microsoft’s webOS first introduced stacked multitasking on the Palm Pre, along with features like wireless charging and gesture navigation that are now standard on most smartphones. Apple popularised the concept with iOS 9, making it mainstream.
With HyperOS, Xiaomi is revisiting those classic ideas and sprucing them up with slick animations, AI‑driven optimisations, and better performance scaling.

Expected integration in HyperOS

The new interface is expected to ship with HyperOS’s 2025 update, likely part of the next build after HyperOS 3.1. Once publicly available, users should notice:

  • Seamless multitasking
  • Smoother animations
  • Better use of screen real‑estate

All of this aligns with Xiaomi’s larger goal of building a connected, intelligent ecosystem through Xiaomi HyperConnect.
