Naamsa, the Automotive Business Council of South Africa, reports that a total of 47 979 new vehicles were sold in SA in April 2026. Of these, the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment accounted for 22.8%, or 10 966 units, sold. This signified a 4 591-unit decrease compared to the 15 557 LCVs sold in March 2026. We take a closer look at the five best-selling bakkies in April 2026.

Retaining its position as SA’s best-selling bakkie, 2 955 new eighth-generation Toyota Hilux units found homes in April 2026. Ahead of the new Hilux’s June 2026 launch, despite recording a decrease of 1 163 units compared to March 2026, the current model registered the highest market share in the LCV segment, at 26.9%.

Sales figures for the Ford Ranger remained steady in April 2026, with 2 013 units sold making it the second best-selling vehicle in the LCV segment. The Ranger recorded a market share of 18.3% – an increase of 5% over March 2026.

Rounding out the top three, the Isuzu D-Max, which placed second in March 2026, claimed third spot with 1 045 units sold. The GWM P-Series reclaimed fourth position from the Mahindra Scorpio Pik Up last month, placing the latter bakkie in fifth place.

3. Isuzu D-Max — 1 045 units (down 1 963)
4. GWM P-Series — 588 units (down 197)
5. Mahindra Scorpio Pik Up — 563 units (down 474)

So, which bakkies missed out on the top five? Well, for starters, the recently updated Toyota Land Cruiser Pick Up came in sixth, with 451 units leaving showroom floors in April 2026, while 399 consumers put pen to paper for the Volkswagen Amarok. A total of 315 Nissan Navaras left showroom floors in April 2026.
