BAIC has hinted that its new bakkie, unveiled at the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, may be headed for South Africa.

BAIC says it wants to future-proof its model lineup with a mix of new SUVs, new-energy vehicles (NEVs) and a fresh pickup. In announcing the all-new pickup series, the company called it “a strategic move that speaks directly to markets like South Africa.”

While BAIC hasn’t released full specifications yet, the Chinese marque says the bakkie has been built with durability, load capability, off-road ability and everyday usability in mind. It will launch with an internal combustion engine (ICE), with electrified powertrain options planned for future variants.

With many new models breaking into the local market in 2026 — such as the Kia Tasman, JMC Vigus, Chery KP31 and Tiggo V — there’s a real possibility BAIC’s pickup could arrive in South Africa.

According to the company, “With a rapidly expanding global footprint, a more defined multi-brand strategy and the introduction of a new pickup range, BAIC is positioning itself to compete more aggressively in South Africa’s most important vehicle segments.”
