5. BYD Seal – 9 units
In April 2026, nine new BYD Seals were sold, the same number as in March. Buyers can choose between a rear-wheel-drive version with a single electric motor rated at 230 kW/360 N.m, and an all-wheel-drive variant with dual motors delivering 390 kW/670 N.m. Both models run on an 82.6 kWh battery and offer ranges of 570 km (RWD) and 520 km (AWD), respectively.
4. BYD Atto 3 – 11 (down 17)
The Atto 3 arrived in South Africa in June 2023, the same month BYD made its local debut. Last month saw 11 buyers, down 17 from March 2026. The car uses a single front-mounted electric motor of 150 kW and 310 N.m. Across the range, you can get a 49.9 kWh Standard Range (345 km) or a 60.5 kWh Extended Range (420 km). Prices range from R699 900 to R783 900.
3. BYD Sealion 7 – 14 (up 5)
A total of 14 Sealion 7 units were registered in April, up five from March. The Sealion 7 shares powertrain options with the Seal, but its front-wheel-drive version makes 380 N.m of torque, while the all-wheel-drive variant delivers a combined 390 kW and 690 N.m. With an 82.6 kWh battery, the Premium and Performance AWD models offer ranges of up to 567 km and 542 km, respectively. The Sealion 7 Premium starts at R1 109 900, and the Performance AWD goes from R1 319 900.
2. Volvo EX30 – 24 (down 1)
The Volvo EX30 was the second-best seller in April 2026 with 24 units sold: 15 Standard EX30 and nine Cross Country variants. It’s offered in four trims: Single Motor Core (51 kWh, 344 km range); Single Motor Extended Range (69 kWh, 476 km range) in Plus or Ultra; and Twin Motor Performance (69 kWh, 460 km). The Cross Country variant is rated at 427 km. Rear-wheel-drive Single Motor models produce 200 kW/343 N.m, while the Twin Motor Performance version is all-wheel drive at 315 kW/543 N.m. Prices range from R835 500 to R1 165 000.
1. BYD Dolphin Surf – 302 (up 63)
The BYD Dolphin Surf was the best-selling EV in South Africa in April 2026, with 302 units sold – up 63 from March’s 239. It’s priced from R341 900 and is powered by a 55 kW, 135 N.m motor. Buyers can choose between a 30.1 kWh or a 38.9 kWh battery, offering claimed ranges of up to 300 km and 400 km, respectively.
