In April 2026, a total of 47 979 new vehicles were sold in South Africa. Of these, the passenger-vehicle segment accounted for 71.7% of sales, or 34 414 units. This marked a 428-unit decrease compared to March 2026, when 34 812 passenger vehicles were sold. Here’s a closer look at the five best-selling hatchbacks in the fourth month of 2026.
Despite slipping to second place among the best-selling passenger cars in SA in April 2026, the locally-built VW Polo Vivo remained the top-selling hatchback. In second place was the Suzuki Swift with 1 556 new units in April 2026 — up 156 from March. Rounding out the top three is the Hyundai Grand i10 with 1 347 buyers. The updated sixth-generation VW Polo took fourth, followed by the Toyota Vitz in fifth.
