The VW Golf GTI Edition 50 has dethroned the Honda Civic Type R as the fastest front-wheel-drive vehicle around the Nürburgring.

In 2026, the Mk7 VW Golf GTI Clubsport S still held the Nürburgring’s front-wheel-drive lap record—with a time of 7 minutes 49.21 seconds—but back in 2017 the crown belonged to the FK8 Honda Civic Type R, which cut the Nordschleife lap in 7 minutes 44.881 seconds. Now VW has reclaimed the top spot with the Golf GTI Edition 50, driven by VW test driver Benny Leuchter, posting a lap of 7 minutes 44.523 seconds around the Nordschliefe.
The Edition 50 is the most powerful Golf GTI yet. Its EA888 engine makes 239 kW and 420 Nm of torque, sending drive to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch (DSG) transmission. It claims a 0-100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h. For comparison, the standard Mk8.5 Golf GTI sends 195 kW and 370 Nm from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder.
Under the skin, the Edition 50 picks up a few upgrades, including stiffer springs and revised chassis tuning. It also comes with a Performance Pack that lowers ride height by 5 mm and saves about 30 kg. The car rides on 19-inch forged wheels shod with Bridgestone tyres, and you’ll find an Akrapovič exhaust system as well.
At the moment, the Edition 50 isn’t confirmed for the South African market. VW South Africa told us the Mk8.5 Golf GTI Clubsport is being considered for SA instead.
