In April 2026, naamsa, the Automotive Business Council of South Africa, reported a total of 47 979 new vehicles were sold in SA. That figure is up by 5 512 compared with April 2025, but down by 10 081 from March 2026.
Of the total new-vehicle sales, about 91.1% were dealer sales. The car rental sector accounted for 5.1% of the total, while government sales and industry corporate fleets made up 1.6% and 2.2% respectively.
Looking specifically at new passenger-car sales within the total, passenger cars accounted for 71.7% — that’s 34 414 units — up by 4 301 (14.3%) compared with April 2025. However, the sector fell slightly from March 2026, with 428 fewer passenger cars sold (34 842 in March 2026).
For the first time in April 2026, the Chery Tiggo 4/Cross took the top spot as SA’s best-selling passenger car, with 1 871 new units sold. The VW Polo Vivo was very close behind in second with 1 847 units, while the Suzuki Swift ranked third with 1 556 units. Fourth and fifth went to the Hyundai Grand i10 and Haval Jolion, posting 1 347 and 1 277 units respectively.
