In a value-driven market like South Africa, the sub-R300k scene is thriving, especially in the value-focused compact crossover/SUV segment. If you’re in the market for sub-R300k and want to know which models were the most popu­lar in April 2026, we’ve pulled the latest Naamsa sales figures to highlight the five best-selling compact SUVs under R300 000 in SA for the fourth month of 2026.

5. Hyundai Exter – 362 (down 75)
The Hyundai Exter finished fifth in April 2026 with 362 units sold, down 75 from March 2026. It runs a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 61 kW and 114 N.m. Buyers can choose between a five-speed manual or an automated manual transmission (AMT) with the same number of gears. The Exter is priced from R269 900.

4. Mahindra XUV 3XO – 406 (down 650)
The Mahindra XUV 3XO, which was part of CAR Magazine’s 2025 SUV Shootout, slipped to fourth place in April 2026 with 406 units sold – a drop of 650 from March (1 056). All variants use a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol engine delivering 82 kW and 200 N.m of torque. Transmission choices are six-speed manual or six-speed auto. The XUV 3XO starts from R259 999.

3. Nissan Magnite – 475 (down 478)
The Nissan Magnite was the third-best-selling compact SUV under R300k in April 2026, with 475 units sold (down 478 from March). The Magnite starts at R252 200 for the passenger version, while the commercial panel-van derivative starts at R229 900. Power comes from two options: a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre three-cylinder making 53 kW/96 N.m, and a turbo version making 74 kW/160 N.m. The NA engine can be paired with either a five-speed manual or AMT, while the turbo gets a five-speed manual or CVT.

2. Kia Sonet – 688 (down 270)
The Kia Sonet finished second with 688 units sold in April 2026, down 270 from March. It sits just under the R300k mark at R299 995 for the passenger model, with a commercial panel-van variant from R294 995. The entry-level Sonet uses a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 85 kW and 144 N.m to the front wheels via a six-speed manual.

1. Chery Tiggo 4 Pro/Cross – 1 871 (down 17)
Topping the list is the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro/Cross, with a strong 1 871 units sold in April 2026, a slight dip of 17 from March. The Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo Cross are priced from R269 900 and R279 900, respectively. The Tiggo 4 Pro uses an 83 kW/138 N.m naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine, available with a five-speed manual or CVT. The Tiggo Cross can be had with CVT, and also offers a 1.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
